The Olympics are over

March 1, 2010 at 10:39 pm (Random Ramblings)

Because I’m feeling extra proud to be Canadian today, an all Canadian playlist (maybe this will erase from my memory the fact that A Simple Plan and M.F’ing Nickelback played the closing ceremony.  Those of you who know me know my thoughts on Nickelback, those who don’t lets just say I would rather rip my own ears off than be forced to listen to them.

Dead Honey – Die Mannequin

Do it or Die – Die Mannequin

The Dead Can’t Testify – Billy Talent

Anna – Pure (this one’s a little old but I’ve been listening to it again lately and I still love it)

The Olympics are over and to be honest I really don’t know what I’m going to do with myself now.  As my friend noted – they really were a nice break from the winter blahs.  Maybe it was the fact that they took place in Canada this time but I think I watched more events than I have in the past.  And I have to say – WAY TO GO CANADA!!!  I’m so impressed with the athletes and the way the country responded to it all.  Here’s what I loved the most about the Olympics this year.

First, I LOVE every single second of this video.  If you haven’t seen it (and you may have seen the last part of it but you NEED to watch the whole thing because THIS is pure MAGIC!!!)  It’s Marianne St-Gelais (who won a silver medal herself) cheering for her boyfriend Charles Hamelin as he wins gold.  Watch this and tell me you don’t love her.

THAT…. is how you cheer for your boyfriend at the Olympics!!!  It gives me chills.

I love Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir!!!!  I love that they have been skating together since they were 7 and 9 and in an interview she said that she’s never ever considered another partner and that it isn’t an avenue she would ever go down.  I love that at the end of their free skate you could see him mouth the words “thank you so much”.  I love that he wore a Team Canada hockey jersey when they did their Gala performance skate on Sat.  I think mostly it’s because I used to be a huge figure skating fan but got sick of it because of all of the judging nonsense and I think it’s so great to see people finally being rewarded based on their skill and not what country they are from.  And I just think they are adorable and although they are not a couple I totally wish they were.   I love that they sang the National Anthem at their medal ceremony with everything they had and he said after that he hoped there weren’t any microphones nearby.

Part of it might also be that Tessa Virtue looks so much like Ione Skye from one of my favorite movies.  A little gem called Say Anything, and so, everytime I see her I think about that movie and how much I wanted to marry Lloyd Dobler, and maybe still do.  Wish I could find a better close up pic of Virtue but this is the best I can do.

Um, SIDNEY FREAKING CROSBY!!!!  That hockey game was ridiculous and I have a confession to make.  I kinda sorta missed the goal live, but I need to explain.  I don’t have the nerves or the stomach to handle games and overtime like that.  I just can’t deal with it and the last few minutes of the game and the overtime were causing me too much stress and by the time  Luongo saved the shot from Pavelski I was having a full on Tom Cruise moment standing on my couch and I realized that I needed to chill for a minute and catch my breath or I was going to have a heart attack, so I paused the game and went to the kitchen to get a beverage only to hear my neighbour cheer about 15 seconds later and I quickly understood that A.  we had won the game and B. I had missed it (sorta).  I did run back to the tv and un-pause it so I saw it about 20 seconds delayed.  I think it still counts.   But man, that game nearly killed me.

As for the Closing Ceremony – I loved how they made fun of the torch malfunction from the opening ceremony.  And also…..William Shatner and Michael J. Fox!!!  Brilliant!!

I still love Shaun White!  He is insane and his final run was crazy!!  Also he was adorable on Oprah.

I think Joannie Rochette was amazing and to win a bronze medal under those circumstances was beyond belief.

I love Alex Bilodeau, I think he’s adorable and seems so humble and genuine and I’m glad he will forever be the first Canadian to win a gold medal at home.

I also love Jon Montgomery and the pitcher of beer he drank while walking down the street.  But I still think Skeleton is pure insanity.

I have to give a shout out to Brian Williams because at the beginning of the games I was lamenting the fact that Ron McLean wouldn’t be hosting them but I have to say that I loved Brian Williams and I thought he did a great job.

I love that the Olympic rings in the harbour were lit up gold every time Canada won a gold medal.

I love this web site with the funny faces of figure skaters in action.

Finally I would like to say again that I am really proud to be Canadian right now!  I’m proud that we won the most gold medals EVER.  I’m proud that we won the most medals we’ve ever won at a winter games.  So I might have been a little emotional after the hockey game last night because almost every winning montage or commercial that they played about the games or Canadian pride was making me a little teary eyed.  This video essay however, put me over the edge, I cried.  That’s right, I said it.

GO CANADA GO!
